Type locality: "Colombia, Departamento del Chocó, Municipio San José del Palmar, 12-12.6 Km. por carretera E. San José del Palmar, flanco occidntal Serranía de los Paraguas, 1850-1860 m."

Known only from the quebradas along the highway between Cartago and San José del Palmar on the western slopes of the Serranía de los Paraguas, 1850–1860 m elevation, Departamento Chocó, Colombia.

Comment
Considered the sister species of Eleutherodactylus pugnax in the original publication. In the Pristimantis (Pristimantis) unistrigatus species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 128. Not assignable to a species group according to Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 128.
