Osornophryne simpsoni Páez-Moscoso, Guayasamin, and Yánez-Muñoz, 2011, ZooKeys, 108: 80. Holotype: QCAZ 49774, by original designation. Type locality: " near San Rafael-Chontayacu (1°16′ 34.61″ S, 78° 4′ 21.14″ W, 2266 m.a.s.l.), Reserve Ankaku-Zona, Río Challuwayacu, Provincia de Pastaza, Ecuador".

Distribution
Known only from the type locality and its surrounding areas in the Reserve Ankaku-Zona, Pastaza Province, and Llanaganates National Park and Machay Reserve, Tungurahua Province, Ecuador, 2100 to 2400 m elevation.

Comment
The sister species of Osornophryne occidentalis according to the original publication. Reyes-Puig, Reyes-Puig, Franco-Mena, Jost, and Yánez-Muñoz, 2022, ZooKeys, 1081: 51, provided a record from Machay Reserve, Tungurahua Province, Ecuador.
