Zool., São Paulo, 31: 289. Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2001, Anf. Municipio Rio de Janeiro: 69, provided a brief account and photo. Faivovich, Nicoli, Blotto, Pereyra, Baldo, Barrionuevo, Fabrezi, Wild, and Haddad, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9: 207–227, suggested that Ceratophrys aurita is the sister taxon of Ceratophrys joazeirensis. Forti, Haddad, Leite, Drummond, Assis, Crivellari, Mello, Garcia, Zornosa-Torres, and Toledo, 2019, PeerJ, 7(e7612): 1–39, reported on advertisement call. Mira-Mendes, Dias, Costa, Costa, Silva, Weber, and Zina, 2022, Zootaxa, 5124: 594–600, reported on the external and internal oral cavity anatomy of the larva.
