Comment

Formerly considered a synonym of Ceratophrys ornata, with which it is parapatric. Cei, 1987, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Suppl., 21: 220–222, discussed this taxon in comparison with Ceratophrys ornata, with which it had been synonymized. Vera Candioti, 2005, Acta Zool., Stockholm, 86: 1–11, reported on larval morphology. Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 15, briefly discussed the range in Paraguay. Vera Candioti, 2007, Zootaxa, 1600: 1–175, reported on detailed larval morphology. Valetti, Salas, and Martino, 2013, Rev. Biol. Tropical, 61: 273–280, reported on bioacoustics. Faivovich, Nicoli, Blotto, Pereyra, Baldo, Barrionuevo, Fabrezi, Wild, and Haddad, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9: 207–227, suggested that this species is the sister taxon of Ceratophrys ornata. Weiler, Núñez, Airaldi, Lavilla, Peris, and Baldo, 2013, Anf. Paraguay: 48, provided a brief account, image, and dot map for Paraguay. Salas, Zavattieri, di Tada, Martino, and Bridarolli, 1998, Cuad. Herpetol., 12: 37–48, discussed the call. The advertisement call was described in the original publication.
