Colostethus ayarzaguenai La Marca, 1997 "1996", Publ. Asoc. Amigos Doñana, 9: 7. Holotype: MHNLS 12949, by original designation. Type locality: "sector central de Cerro Jaua, Estado Bolívar (4° 49′ 55 N y 64° 25′ 54 W)".

Prior to the revision of Grant, Frost, Caldwell, Gagliardo, Haddad, Kok, Means, Noonan, Schargel, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 299, placed in group VI (Colostethus fuliginosus group) of Rivero according to the original publication. Barrio-Amorós, 2004, Rev. Ecol. Lat.
