Colostethus tepuyensis La Marca, 1997 "1996", Publ. Asoc. Amigos Doñana, 9: 49. Holotype: ULABG 2557, by original designation. Type locality: "entre Danto y Piñón, a casi una hora caminando desde Danto, en el trayecto desde Kamarate hasta las laderas del Auyantepui, Estado Bolívar, Venezuela, 1.650 m s.n.m."

La Marca, Señaris, and Molina, 2002, Herpetol. Rev., 33: 219, provided a range extension and commented on the range. Myers and Donnelly, 2008, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 308: 30–45, provided an account and compared the holotype description with their material, and noted some differences. Sánchez, 2013, Zootaxa, 3637: 569–591, provided information on larval morphology. Señaris, Lampo, Rojas-Runjaic, and Barrio-Amorós, 2014, Guía Ilust. Anf. Parque Nac.
