Known only from the type locality, located in the headwaters of the Mayo River basin at an elevation of 3308 m, in the Amazonas department, Peru.

In the Gastrotheca marsupiata group, previously confused with Gastrotheca peruana, distinguished by molecular markers (mt- and nuDNA) and adult comparative morphology.
