Gastrotheca peruana junensis Vellard, 1957, Mem. Mus. Hist. Nat. Javier Prado, 5: 33. Holotype: MUSM 195. Morales, Carrillo, and Ortega, 1990, Publ. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Nac. Mayor San Marcos, 33: 5, apparently regarded the holotype to be part of a syntypic series and designated MUSM 1595 (formerly 195) as lectotype. Type locality: "riachuelo arriba de la laguna de Punrun, 4,600 mts.", Departamento Pasco, Peru. Subspecies status rejected by Duellman and Fritts, 1972, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 9: 11.

Distribution

Andes and inter-Andean valleys of central Peru (Departments of Ancash, Lima, Pasco, and Junín), 2300–4600 m elevation.

Sinsch, 1986, Bol. Lima, 8 (45): 23–33, characterized adults and larvae. In the Gastrotheca marsupiata group of Duellman, Maxson, and Jesiolowski, 1988, Copeia, 1988: 527–543. In the Gastrotheca marsupiata group of Castroviejo-Fisher, Padial, De la Riva, Pombal, Silva, Rojas-Runjaic, Medina-Méndez, and Frost, 2015, Zootaxa, 4004: 1–72. See detailed account by Duellman, 2015, Marsupial Frogs: 351–357, who suggested that molecular analysis would likely discern cryptic species. See comment under Gastrotheca dissimilis, which was recognized from within Gastrotheca peruana in 2019. Folly, Amaral, Silveira, Carvalho-e-Silva, and Dias, 2024, J. Morphol., 285(285:e21766): 1–12, reported on larval crania anatomy and discussed phylogenetic significance of these data.
