See Cochran, 1955 "1954", Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 206: 86; and Bokermann, 1972, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 32: 291-295; and Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 467-469, for discussion. Records of this species from Argentina have been referred to Hypsiboas semiguttatus by Carrizo, 1991 "1990", Cuad. Herpetol., 5: 32-39. In the Bokermannohyla claresignata group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 83. Lyra, Lourenço, Pinheiro, Pezzuti, Baêta, Barlow, Hofreiter, Pombal, Haddad, and Faivovich, 2020, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 190: 1235–1255, provided evidence that this species is in Boana, with Boana clepsydra forming the Boana claresignata group. The authors also reported on morphology. Portik, Streicher, and Wiens, 2023, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 188 (107907): 67, confirmed the placement of the species in Boana.
