Holotype: Formerly Smithsonian Museum (USNM) 6225, by original designation; now lost according to Duellman, 1977, Das Tierreich, 95: 81. Type locality: "Paraguay". COMMENT: This name has not been assigned to any known species (Duellman, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 145). Brusquetti and Lavilla, 2006, Cuad. Herpetol., 20: 24, briefly discussed that this name could apply to any number of species of Boana.

Hypsiboas hypselops Cope, 1871 "1870", Proc. Am. Philos. Soc., 11: 554. Type(s): Not stated, presumably originally in ANSP or USNM or possibly in the Philadelphia Museum. Type locality: "Pebas, Equador", Departamento Loreto, Peru. * Hyla hypselopsBoulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 353. ENGLISH NAME(S): Pebas Treefrog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 55). DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality (Pebas) in northeastern Peru. COMMENT: Name not associated with any known species (Duellman, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 137). Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 354, stated that the species is distinguished from Hyla crepitans by its acuminate snout, larger eye, and anterior femoral bands and on that basis is here considered a nomen dubium, likely based on some species of Boana. Faivovich, Pinheiro, Lyra, Pereyra, Baldo, Muñoz-Saravia, Reichle, Brandão, Giaretta, Thomé, Chaparro, Baêta, Widholzer, Baldo, Lehr, Wheeler, Garcia, and Haddad, 2021, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 155 (106981): 1–18, reported on the molecular phylogenetics of the Boana pulchella group, defining five major clades.

Removed from the synonymy of Hyla (as Hypsiboas) by Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 85, where it had been placed by Duméril and Bibron, 1841, Erp. Gen., 6: 542; Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 337. Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 75, placed Hypsiboas within Cophomantini and recognized the Hypsiboas albopunctatus group, Hypsiboas benitezi group, Hypsiboas faber group, Hypsiboas pellucens group, Hypsiboas pulchellus group, Hypsiboas punctatus group, and Hypsiboas semilineatus group. Faivovich, Garcia, Ananias, Lanari, Basso, and Wheeler, 2004, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 32: 938–950, provided a phylogenetic analysis of molecular characters of the Hyla pulchella group, showing that the Hyla polytaenia group is imbedded within it. For this reason they considered the Hyla polytaenia group to be part of the Hyla pulchella group. Cruz and Caramaschi, 1998, Bol. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 392: 1–19, restricted the Hyla polytaenia group (and transferred other former members to the Hyla pulchella group) and provided accounts for its members. Savage, 2002, Copeia, 2002: 546, recommended recognition of Dendropsophus for the 2N = 30 "Hylas" and Boana for the Hyla boans group. Garcia, Vinciprova, and Haddad, 2003, Herpetologica, 59: 360, disputed the unification of the Hyla pulchella and Hyla circumdata groups as proposed by Napoli in an unpublished dissertation, as did Faivovich, Garcia, Ananias, Lanari, Basso, and Wheeler, 2004, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 32: 938–950. Duellman, De la Riva, and Wild, 1997, Sci. Pap. Nat. Hist. Mus. Univ. Kansas, 3: 1–41, provided a discussion of the Andean species (as Hyla). Pyburn and Hall, 1984, Herpetologica, 40: 366–372, supplied a key to species of the former Hyla geographica group. Antunes, Faivovich, and Haddad, 2008, Copeia, 2008: 170–190, provided a phylogenetic tree for the Hypsiboas pulchellus group and suggested that the Hypsiboas polytaenius clade is not monophyletic. Köhler, Koscinski, Padial, Chaparro, Handford, Lougheed, and De la Riva, 2010, Zool. Scripta, 39: 572–590, reported on the phylogenetics of the Hypsiboas pulchellus group. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543–583, suggested that the Hypsiboas punctatus group and Hypsiboas benitezi group are not monophyletic (but see comment under Hylinae). Funk, Caminer, and Ron, 2011, Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. B, Biol. Sci., 279: 1806–1814, suggested they had discovered 7 unnamed species in Amazonian Ecuador and adjacent Peru, as well as Surinam and French Guiana on the basis of molecular markers, morphology, and acoustic data. Caminer and Ron, 2014, ZooKeys, 370: 1–68, reported on the phylogenetics of the Hypsiboas calcaratus species complex. Dubois, 2017, Bionomina, 11: 17, discussed the issue at some length and arrived at the conclusion that Boana was the appropriate generic name for the taxon. Carvalho, Rodrigues, Siqueira, and Garcia, 2014, Genet. Mol. Res., 13: 7826–7838, reported on chromosomal evolution (as Hypsiboas). Peloso, Oliveira, Sturaro, Rodrigues, Lima, Bitar, Wheeler, and Aleixo, 2018, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 13: 150–169, reported on the molecular phylogenetics of the Boana semilineata species group. Dewynter, Marty, Courtois, Blanc, and Fouquet, 2017, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 9: 1–20, provided an illustrated identification key to the species (as Hypsiboas) of French Guiana. Lyra, Lourenço, Pinheiro, Pezzuti, Baêta, Barlow, Hofreiter, Pombal, Haddad, and Faivovich, 2020, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 190: 1235–1255, provided evidence that Bokermannohyla clepsydra and Bokermannohyla claresignata form the sister taxon of the Boana pulchella group, which was transferred into Boana as the new Boana claresignata  group. Vasconcellos, Colli, and Cannatella, 2021, J. Biogeograph., 48: 305–320, reported on the biogeography of the Boana pulchella group. Rainha, Martinez, Moraes, Castro, Réjaud, Fouquet, Leite, Rodrigues, and Werneck, 2021, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 134: 177–197, investigated the influence of subtle environmental factors on morphology and via molecular analysis identified many unnamed lineages in Amazonia and associated areas within the Boana calcarata/Boana fasciata complex. Pinheiro, Blotto, Ron, Stanley, Garcia, Haddad, Grant, and Faivovich, 2022, Zool.
