Confused with Boana fasciatus prior to its naming according to the original publication, where the morphology, advertisement call, and molecular phylogenetic relations within the Boana albopunctata group, Boana steinbachi clade, were detailed. Ávila and Kawashita-Ribeiro, 2011, Check List, 7: 750–755, provided a record and photograph (as Hypsiboas fasciatus) from the São João da Barra Hydroelectric Plant, state of Mato Grosso, Brazil.
