Herpetol., 15: 287; this being in error as the type still exists and is not a Centrolenella but a Sphaenorhynchus according to Harding, 1991, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 103: 413-418 (Neotype being an example of Centrolenella savagei). Type locality: "Süd-Amerika".

See discussion of the status of this species in Harding, 1991, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 103: 413-418. The designation of a neotype for this nominal species (Lynch, 1981, J. Herpetol., 15: 283-291) was in error; see Centrolenella savagei (Centrolenidae). See account as Sphaenorhycnhus orophilus by Heyer, Rand, Cruz, Peixoto, and Nelson, 1990, Arq. Zool., São Paulo, 31: 286-287. Cruz, Feio, and Caramaschi, 2009, Anf. Ibitipoca: 110-111, provided photographs and a brief account (as Sphaenorhynchus orophilus) for Parque Estadual do Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Araujo-Vieira, Caramaschi, Grillitsch, Grant, and Faivovich, 2018, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 13: 73–84, discussed the identity of this species. Pereira Silva, Ceron, Silva, and Santana, 2022, Ecol. Evol., 12(e8754): 1–15, reported on phylogenetic relationships and biogeography and provided a polygon map of the species. Manzano, Takeno, and Sawaya, 2022, Zootaxa, 5178: 453–472, reported on the advertisement call.
