In the Hylodes nasus group of Heyer, 1982, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 95: 377-385. Haddad, Garcia, and Pombal, 2003, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 61: 245-254, rediagnosed the taxon based on near topotypes and noted it to be closely related to Hylodes heyeri and in the Hylodes lateristrigatus group. Monteiro, Comitti, and Lingnau, 2014, Biotemas, 27: 93–99, described the advertisement call and made acoustic comparisons with Hylodes heyeri.
