Comment
Afrixalus crotalus was considered an allopatric subspecies of Afrixalus aureus by Pickersgill, 2005, Steenstrupia, 29: 22. This was not accepted by Du Preez and Carruthers, 2009, Compl. Guide Frogs S. Afr.: 224–225, who retained it as a distinct species and provided an account. See also accounts by Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 77–78, and Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 133–134. Mercurio, 2011, Amph. Malawi: 145, provided an account for Malawi. Du Preez and Carruthers, 2017, Frogs S. Afr., Compl. Guide: 242–243, provided an account, including a polygon range map, photograph, identification features, adult morphology, habitat, and call. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 164–165, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map.
