Afrixalus pygmaeus septentrionalis Schiøtz, 1974, Vidensk. Medd. Dansk Naturhist. Foren., 137: 15. Holotype: NMK 1424 (Sample A938), by original designation. Type locality: "between Mtito Andei and Ngulia Hills, Kenya".

Afrixalus septentrionalis septentrionalis — Dubois, 1986 "1985", Alytes, 4: 97-100. Noting the homonym status of Hyperolius pygmaeus Ahl, 1931, and applying the next older species-group name.

English Names

Kenya Banana Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 66).

Northern Spiny Reed Frog (Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 141).

Distribution

Dry savanna in southern Kenya near Tsavo National Park and northeastern Tanzania.

The status and nomenclature of this species presents substantial difficulties; see discussions by Pickersgill, 2005, Steenstrupia, 29: 1-38, for discussion who considered this part of the Afrixalus stuhlmanni complex. Lawson, Liedtke, Menegon, and Loader, 2018, Herpetol. Notes, 11: 873–879, reported on reproductive characteristics. Spawls, Wasonga, and Drewes, 2019, Amph. Kenya: 18, provided a range map for Kenya, photograph, and brief characterization.
