Type locality: "Uhehe, Massai-Steppe", Tanzania. Considered a subspecies of Hyperolius marmoratus by Laurent, 1961, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 64: 83. The description in Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 413, was published subsequently according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 424.

Schiøtz, 1999, Treefrogs Afr.: 206–228, and specifically to the forms he treats as Reesi. Removed from the synonymy of Hyperolius glandicolor by Harper, Measey, Patrick, Menegon, and Vonesh, 2010, Field Guide Amph. E. Arc Mts. Tanzania and Kenya: 200–201, who provided a brief account as Hyperolius reesi and photograph, and by Channing, 2022, Zootaxa, 5134: 340, where it had been placed by Wieczorek, Drewes, and Channing, 2000, J. Biogeograph., 27: 1235. Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 407–450, briefly discussed the ZMB types and their collectors and provenance of Hyperolius goetzei.
