Comment

Most of the literature prior to 2007 refers to this species as Hyperolius puncticulatus, which Pickersgill, 2007, Frog Search: 334–338, suggested is actually a synonym of Hyperolius parkeri, and all mainland records refer to Hyperolius substriatus. Records of "Hyperolius puncticulatus" south of Malawi are referable to Hyperolius argus according to J. C. Poynton In Laurent, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 216. See account (as Hyperolius puncticulatus) by Poynton and Broadley, 1987, Ann. Natal Mus., 28: 200–202, in which they discuss taxonomic confusion and the possibility that this is a conspecific with Hyperolius argus. See account (as Hyperolius puncticulatus) by Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 175–176, and Channing and Howell, 2006, Amph. E. Afr.: 177-178. Köhler, Scheelke, Schick, Veith, and Lötters, 2005, Afr. Zool., 40: 137–138, provided comments on calls. Broadley, 2007, Afr. J. Herpetol., 56: 175–177, commented on this species and noted that it does not occur in Zimbabwe. Portik, Mulungu, Sequeira, and McEntee, 2013, Herpetol. Rev., 44: 395–396, provided records for Niassa and Zambézia provinces, Mozambique. Conradie, Bittencourt-Silva, Engelbrecht, Loader, Menegon, Nanvonamuquitxo, Scott, and Tolley, 2016, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 92: 163–180, reported populations from Mount Mabu and Mount Namuli, Zambezia Province) Mozambique. Bittencourt-Silva, Lawson, Tolley, Portik, Barratt, Nagel, and Loader, 2017, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 114: 261–270, discussed analytical uncertainty in species delimitation and niche modeling among the various populations. Spawls, Wasonga, and Drewes, 2019, Amph. Kenya: 24, provided a range map for Kenya, photograph, and brief characterization. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 198–199, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 407–450, briefly discussed the collection history of the types of Hyperolius substriatus and Hyperolius scriptus. Bittencourt-Silva, Kamouyiaros, Hartigan, and Okamura, 2024, J. Vert. Biol., Prague, 73(24009): 1–8, discussed a method for extracting mtDNA from museum specimens.
