In the Physalaemus cuvieri clade according to the original publication, where it was distinguished by (only) call and molecular markers from Physalaemus albonotatus, with which it had previously been confused. In addition, larval and adult morphology and karyotype were provided as well as an extensive literature review detailing where previously identified as other species. Rodriguez de Almeida, Barboza Silveira, Rodríguez, Barrasso, Borteiro, and Kolenc, 2025, Cuad. Herpetol., 39: 47–53, provided two genetically-confirmed localities from northwestern Uruguay and described the advertisement call.
