Syntypes: BMNH (3 specimens), by original designation; BMNH 1947.2.22.63–64 (formerly 1882.3.16.61–62) and 1947.2.22.69 (formerly 1882.3.16.63), according to Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 218, and museum records. Type localities: "Ankafana, Betsileo" and "East Betsileo", Madagascar.

Removed from the synonymy of Mantidactylus lugubris by Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 250, where it had been placed by Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 21. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 250–251, provided an account and noted similar unnamed species.
