Distribution

Moist montane forest and bush near the top of Mt. Hengshan, only found near streams from elevation ca. 700 m to ca. 1100 m, Nanyue District, Hengyang Prefecture, Hunan Province, China.

Formerly confused with Boulenophrys brachykolos (although not its closest relative) according to the original publication, where it was distinguished on the basis of comparative morphology, molecular markers, and advertisement calls. Redelimited by the naming of Boulenophrys gutu by Kuang, Wei, Luo, Pei, Cao, Zhang, Huang, Pu, and Shi, 2025, Animals, 15(2745): 1–20, who reported on comparative morphology, morphometrics, molecular markers, and provided a dot map of the distribution.
