Holotype: VNMN 2018.02, by original designation. Type locality: "beside a 5 m wide low-gradient shallow stream in slightly disturbed evergreen forest, Mount Fansipan, Hoang Lien National Park (HLNP), Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province Vietnam (22.33518° N, 103.77947° E, 2075 m asl; . . .)". Hoang Lien Horned Frog (original publication).

Distribution
Known from between 1898–2242 m elevation t four localities, up to 92 km apart in the Hoang Lien Range (Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province, HLNP; Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province; Mount Ky Quan San, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province and Che Tao Commune, Yen Bai Province, Vietnam; presumably to be found in adjacent Yunnan, China.

Tapley, Nguyen, Cutajar, Nguyen, Portway, Luong, and Rowley, 2020, Zootaxa, 4845: 35–52, provided a detailed description of larval morphology. Lyu, Qi, Wang, Zhang, Zhao, Zeng, Wan, Yang, Mo, and Wang, 2023, Zool. Res., Kunming, 44: 380–450, regarded this species as unassigned to species group.
