Distribution
Multiple localities in hilly areas along the border of Jiangxi, Guangdong, and Hunan, including Mount Jiulian, Gaoping Reservoir, Mount Tianjing, Nanshui Reservoir, and Mangshan Nature Reserve, at elevations of 400–990 m, and an isolated locality in Mount Wuyi at the border between Fujian and Jiangxi at elevations of 1125–1350 m.

Comment
Of named species, most closely related to Megophrys obesa, according to the original publication. Qian, Li, Chen, Li, and Yang, 2023, ZooKeys, 1139: 1–32, described larval morphology of Boulenophrys cf. ombrophila from Yizhang County, northern Guangdone Province, China, and discussed the possible range. Lyu, Qi, Wang, Zhang, Zhao, Zeng, Wan, Yang, Mo, and Wang, 2023, Zool. Res., Kunming, 44: 436–437, provided an account and placed it in their Boulenophrys boettgeri group. Shang, Luo, Qian, Gao, Li, Deng, and Yang, 2023, Life Sci. Res., 27: 349–360, discussed the taxonomic status of specimens of Boulenophrys cf. ombrophila, its comparative morphology, and molecular markers for a population from the Mangshan National Nature Reserve, Hunan, China.
