Phrynomantis humicola humicola Zweifel, 1972, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 148: 471. Holotype: AMNH 66261, by original designation. Type locality: "Mt. Otto near Kotuni between 7000 and 8000 ft. (2130–2440 m.) above sea level, Eastern Highlands District [Eastern Highlands Province], Territory of New Guinea [Papua New Guinea]".
