Mantophryne lateralis Boulenger, 1897, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 6, 19: 12. Syntypes: BMNH (several specimens); Parker, 1934, Monogr. Frogs Fam. Microhylidae: 62, noted these as BMNH 1896.10.31.32–36 (with 1896.10.31.35 being identified as a specimen of Metopostira ocellata and 1896.10.31.36 identified as a specimen of Cophixalus oxyrhinus); BMNH 1947.2.11.2 (formerly 1896.10.31.35) designated lectotype by Zweifel, 1972, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 148: 480 (who noted that the remaining specimens represent Hylophorbus rufescens). Type locality: "Mount Victoria, Owen Stanley Range, New Guinea" (probably in Central Province, Papua New Guinea according to Zweifel, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 352.

North coast of Papua (Indonesia), and north and south of the central range of Papua New Guinea.
