Known from Bepia and Andranomadio on the Tsaratanana Massif in Tsaratanana National Park, northern Madagascar, 2295–2503 m elevation; record from Marojejy requires verification.

The sole member of the Rhombophryne proportionalis species group of Belluardo, Scherz, Santos, Andreone, Antonelli, Glaw, Muñoz-Pajares, Randrianirina, Raselimanana, Vences, and Crottini, 2022, Syst. Biodiversity, 20 (1: 2039320): 1–13. Scherz, Glaw, Petzold, Andreone, Köhler, Raselimanana, Hutter, Belluardo, Rakotoarison, Hofreiter, Vences, and Crottini, 2026, Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 76: 485–610, who provided a species account covering phylogenetic relationships, morphology, osteology, advertisement call, natural history, distribution, and other relevant literature.
