Comment
The species, the only one found west of the Andes, is the sister taxon of the remaining species of Elachistocleis according to the original publication. Jowers, Othman, Borzée, Rivas-Fuenmayor, Sánchez-Ramírez, Auguste, Downie, Read, and Murphy, 2021, Organisms Divers. Evol., 21: 194, confirmed the phylogenetic placement of this species. Novaes-e-Fagundes, Lyra, Loredam, Carvalho, Haddad, Rodrigues, Baldo, Barrasso, Loebmann, Ávila, Brusquetti, Prudente, Wheeler, Orrico, and Peloso, 2023, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 197: 552, suggested on molecular grounds that this species is the sister taxon of a group composed of Gastrophryne, Hypopachus, and Elachistocleis, and, as such is questionably a member of Elachistocleis, although they did not offer any taxonomic remedy at this point, leaving Elachistocleis paraphyletic.
