Elachistocleis piauiensis Caramaschi and Jim, 1983, Herpetologica, 39: 391. Holotype: JJ 6024, by original designation. Type locality: "Picos, State of Piauí, Northeastern Brasil (ca. 07° 05′ S and 41° 30′ W)".

Common Names
Piaui Oval Frog (Frank and Ramus, 1995, Compl. Guide Scient. Common Names Amph. Rept. World: 89).
Distribution
Known from three localities: the type locality in Piauí, with at least 3 cryptic associates extending into Ceará, Maranhão, Piauí, Tocantins, and central and western Bahia, Brazil.
Fazenda Minador, Municipality of Mombaça, state of Ceará; and São Luis, state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil.

See comment under Elachistocleis. Santos, Amorim, Brito, and Roberto, 2005, Herpetol. Rev., 36: 332, briefly discussed the range and provided the record for Ceará, Brazil. Nunes, Canedo, and Carvalho, 2010, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 5: 30–34, provided the record from Piauí, Brazil Jowers, Othman, Borzée, Rivas-Fuenmayor, Sánchez-Ramírez, Auguste, Downie, Read, and Murphy, 2021, Organisms Divers. Evol., 21: 189–206, discussed the phylogenetics and biogeography of this species. In the Elachistocleis surinamensis group of Novaes-e-Fagundes, Lyra, Loredam, Carvalho, Haddad, Rodrigues, Baldo, Barrasso, Loebmann, Ávila, Brusquetti, Prudente, Wheeler, Orrico, and Peloso, 2023, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 197: 545–568, who noted that the nominal species is composed of at least four lineages, mapped.
