Heyer, Daugherty, and Maxson, 1982, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 95: 423–427, reviewed the evolutionary relationship of this genus with Paracrinia and Geocrinia, and placed Ranidella in the synonymy of Crinia. Barendse, 1984, Evolution, 18: 1238–1250, reported on allozyme evidence, evolution, and speciation within the genus. Cogger, Cameron, and Cogger, 1983, Zool. Cat. Aust., Amph. Rept., 1: 13–31, retained the separate genera without discussion. See Barker, Grigg, and Tyler, 1995, Field Guide Aust. Frogs., Ed. 2, for keys and accounts. Read, Keogh, Scott, Roberts, and Doughty, 2001, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 21: 294–308, suggested on the basis of mtDNA evidence that Ranidella is not monophyletic and therefore placed it in the synonymy of Crinia; they also noted that recognition of Bryobatrachus rendered Crinia paraphyletic and therefore synonymized that taxon as well. Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, found their exemplar of Bryobatrachus to form the sister taxon of their exemplar of Crinia, and together as the sister taxon of Paracrinia + Assa + Geocrinia. Doughty, Anstis, and Price, 2009, Rec. W. Aust. Mus., 25: 127–144, provided a molecular phylogeny of Crinia that differed in some regards from that provided by Read, Keogh, Scott, Roberts, and Doughty, 2001, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 21: 294–308. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543–583, confirmed the monophyly of the group and provided a tree of their molecular exemplars.
