Hymenochirus boulengeri De Witte, 1930, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 19: 240. Holotype: MRAC 3375; Lang, 1990, Doc. Trav., Inst. R. Sci. Nat. Belg., 59: 11, regarded the holotype as a syntype and IRSNB 1.020 (2 specimens) as additional syntypes. Type locality: "Congo Belge [= Dem. Rep. Congo]: Uele-Itimbiri, Uele-Nepoko ... Mauda".

Mali, Chifundera, Mlungu, Mizani, Katuala, Mbalitini, Ewango, Tungaluna, and Akaibe, 2019, Am. J. Zool., 2: 18–27, reported on specimens from Nord-Kivu, Dem. Rep. Congo. Badjedjea, Masudi, Akaibe, and Gvoždík, 2022, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 16 (1: e301): 59, commented on a population of Hymenochirus cf. boulengeri from the Kokolopori Bonobo Nature Reserve, Tshuapa Province, Dem. Rep. Congo, and the taxonomic questions raised by these specimens.
