Comment
Noble, 1924, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 49: 335; Laurent, 1941, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 34: 194; Laurent, 1957, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 56: 274; and Loveridge, 1957, Bull. Mus. Comp. Zool., 117: 346, included Natalobatrachus in Phrynobatrachus. See Poynton, 1964, Ann. Natal Mus., 17: 143-144 (who resurrected Natalobatrachus), and rejected the inclusion of other species of Phrynobatrachus, Poynton, 1976, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 90: 218-219, and Lambiris, 1988, Lammergeyer, 39: 108-109, for accounts and discussion. Scott, 2005, Cladistics, 21: 531, suggested that Natalobatrachus is in Phrynobatrachidae rather than in Cacosterninae as hypothesized by Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 136. Wiens, Sukumaran, Pyron, and Brown, 2009, Evolution, 63: 1217-1231, provided corroboration for this taxon to rest within Cacosterninae and suggested it to be the sister taxon of Arthroleptella, a result confirmed by Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences.
