Comment
Prior to the revision of Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297, placed in the Section Hylarana, subsection Hydrophylax, subgenus Papurana of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 326. Regarded as a junior synonym of Rana varians by Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Indian Mus., 20: 165 (on the basis of specimens identified by Barbour, 1912, Mem. Mus. Comp. Zool., 44: 66), as a junior synonym of Rana papua by Van Kampen, 1923, Amph. Indo-Austral. Arch.: 201, and as a subspecies of Rana papua by Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 45, suggested that the syntypes likely represented different taxa. See account by Wiridarma, Amarasinghe, Farajallah, Widayati, Fouquet, Riyanto, Mulyadi, Trilaksono, Arida, and Hamidy, 2024, Herpetologica, 80: xxx, where phylogenetic placement, comparative adult morphology, and natural history were detailed. Oliver, Davie-Rieck, Ramdani, Dashper, Kusuma, Lee, Rittmeyer, Clancy, Hamidy, Thompson, Fouquet, Ferreira, and Richards, 2025, Pacific Conserv. Biol., 31(PC24063): 1–12, as part of a larger discussion of the role of citizen science in documenting species ranges in Melanesia noted that iNaturalist provided a record from Morotai I., Papua, Indonesia.
