Rana pantherina Van Kampen, 1910, Natuurkd. Tijdschr. Nederl. Indie, 69: 22. Holotype: ZMA, now lost according to Van Tuijl, 1995, Bull. Zool. Mus. Univ. Amsterdam, 14: 128. Type locality: "Bandar Baru liegt im Battak-Gebirge, etwa 1000 M. hoch" (= Bander Baru in the Battak Mountains, 1000 m elevation), Deli, Sumatra. Preoccupied by Rana tigrina var. pantherina Steindachner, 1867 (= Limnonectes rugulosus).

Distribution
Widespread on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, ranging from the northern part of Provinsi Aceh to Kabupaten Pasawaran, the southern part of Provinsi Lampung, 425–1545 m elevation.

Südostasiens: 84–86, to compare this species to other ranids of the Sunda Shelf region. Inger and Iskandar, 2005, Raffles Bull. Zool., 53: 140, doubted the distinctiveness of this taxon from Hydrophylax kampeni.
