Type locality: "roadside bank along the road to las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 km (by rd) S Highway 140 from las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico (19° 35.5′ N, 97° 05.7′ W, 3000 m elevation)".

Common Names
Cofre de Perote Salamander (original publication; Liner and Casas-Andreu, 2008, Herpetol. Circ., 38: 34).
Cofre de Perote Giant Salamander (Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 643).
Distribution
Known from a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating in a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality, in the Sierra Madre Oriental in central Veracruz, Mexico, 2500-3000 m elevation; also reported from the pine forest in the municipality of of Chignautla, at elevations of 2879 m and 2918 m elevation, and the municipality of Tetela de Ocampo, Puebla, Mexico.

In the Pseudoeurycea bellii complex, related to Pseudoeurycea gigantea, according to the original publication. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 287, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 590. Fernández-Badillo, Morales-Capellán, González-Bonilla, Canseco-Márquez, and Hernández-Silva, 2020, Amph. Rept. Conserv., 14: 200–205, provided a new record and discussed specimens and the known range of the species. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 643–644, provided an account summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
