Desmognathus valtos Pyron and Beamer, 2022, Zootaxa, 5188: 590. Holotype: MNHN 2021.0131, by original designation. Type locality: "Otter Creek (NC: Craven; 34.968, -76.958; 4m ASL)", Craven County, North Carolina, USA.

Coastal plain of North Carolina (vicinity of the type locality in Craven County)m south along the coastal plain in South Carolina into southeastern Georgia to the vicinity of Candler County, USA.

This taxon corresponds to Desmognathus auriculatus lineages B and C of Pyron, O'Connell, Lemmon, Lemmon, and Beamer, 2020, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 146 (106751): 1–13, and was formerly confused with Desmognathus auriculatus. The comparative morphometrics were provided in the original publication.
