Distribution
Humid Pacific lowlands and premontane slopes of the southern Pacific slopes of Costa Rica and adjacentwestern Panama; premontane zone of Atlantic slope Costa Rica and southern lower monte belt of the Cordillera de Talamanca, 404-2000 m elevation.

Removed from the synonymy of Dermophis mexicanus by Savage and Wake, 2001, Copeia, 2001: 52-64, where it had been placed by Savage and Wake, 1972, Copeia, 1972: 680-695.
