Ichthyophis laosensis Taylor, 1969, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 48: 292. Holotype: MNHNP 1928.95, by original designation. Herpetol., 28 (3A): 68, suggested that the type locality can be construed as "areas around Luang Prabang in central Laos", although this is disputed by Stuart, Seateun, Sivongxay, and Phimmachak, 2025 "2024", in Wildlife Lao PDR: 19, who noted that the type locality, fide A. Ohler (MNHNP) was collected by Jean Théodore Delacour sometime during mid-November 1925–13 January 1926 in “Xieng-Khouang, au Tranninh, dans le nord du Laos (altitude 1,200 a 2,500 meters)".

Comment

Geissler, Poyarkov, Grismer, Nguyen, An, Neang, Kupfer, Ziegler, Böhme, and Müller, 2015, Organisms Divers. Evol., 15: 164–166, provided an account and redescribed the unique holotype. Poyarkov, Nguyen, Popov, Geissler, Pawangkhanant, Neang, Suwannapoom, and Orlov, 2021, Russ. J. Herpetol., 28 (3A): 68, suggested that records from Vietnam and Thailand are anticipated. Teynié, Nguyen, Lorvelec, Piquet, Lottier, and David, 2014, Bull. Soc. Herpetol. France, 151: 25, provided a record for Ichthyophis cf. laosensis from the environs of Viengthong, Houaphan Province, Laos, between 850 and 870 m elevation. Stuart, Seateun, Sivongxay, and Phimmachak, 2025 "2024", in Wildlife Lao PDR: 19–20, briefly summarized literature, taxonomy, habitat, the controversial type locality, and range for Laos, as well as suggesting that the distinctiveness of this taxon from Ichthyophis acuminatus deserves additional work.
