Comment
Heyer, 1969, Contrib. Sci. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 155: 6, and Heyer, 1975, Smithson. Contrib. Zool., 199: 1-55, considered Barycholos closely allied with Eleutherodactylus. Subsequently, Lynch, 1971, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 53: 1-238, and Lynch, 1973, Herpetologica, 29: 232-235, considered this genus most closely related to Adenomera (now part of Leptodactylus), although Lynch, 1980, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. Paris, Sect. A, Zool., 2: 289-302, considered Barycholos most closely related to the Eleutherodactylus discoidalis group (now part of the Eleutherodactylus nigrovittatus group). Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 196-201, placed Barycholos in Brachycephalidae within a paraphyletic Eleutherodactylus, and questioned the monophyly of Barycholos. Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 1-182, placed Barycholos in their Holoadeninae of the new family Strabomantidae, and provided molecular evidence for the monophyly of the group. Campos, Ananias, Haddad, and Kasahara, 2008, Micron, 39: 151-159, reported on karyotypic evidence to place this taxon in Brachycephalidae.
