Centrolenella acanthidiocephala Ruiz-Carranza and Lynch, 1989, Trianea, 3: 67. Holotype: ICN 05285, by original designation. Type locality: "Departamento de Santander, vertiente occidental de la Cordillera Oriental, Municipio de Charalá, Virolí (= Inspecció de Policía de Cañaverales), cabaceras del Río Luisito, 6° 13′ latitud N. 73° 05′ W. de Greenwich, 1750 m.s.n.m."

Municipalities of Charalá and Gámbita on the western slope of the Cordillera Oriental, Departamento de Santander, Colombia, 1750–2100 m elevation.

Comment
In the Centrolene geckoideum group according to Ruiz-Carranza and Lynch, 1991, Lozania, 57: 1-30. Guayasamin, Castroviejo-Fisher, Trueb, Ayarzagüena, Rada, and Vilà, 2009, Zootaxa, 2100: 54, regarded this species as incertae sedis within Centroleninae. See detailed account, literature review, and dot map by Ríos-Soto and Rada, 2018, Catal. Anf. Rept. Colombia, Medellín, 4: 24–28. Carvajal-Cogollo, Quiroga-Huertas, Muñoz-Castro, Hernández-Avendaño, González-Durán, and Meza-Joya, 2023, Zootaxa, 5264 : 341, provided a range extension, discussed the range (including a dot map), adult and larval morphology, and advertisement call, and an mtDNA placing the species within Centrolene.
