Phyllobates carioca Bokermann, 1967, Rev. Brasil. Biol., 27: 352. Holotype: WCAB 38601, by original designation; now in MZUSP 76653 according to Verdade and Rodrigues, 2007, J. Herpetol., 41: 573. Type locality: "Represa Rio Grande, Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara [now Rio de Janeiro], Brasil".

Distribution
Known only from the type locality at Represa Rio Grande, Jacarepaguá, Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the Serra do Mar coastal forest.

Removed from the synonymy of Dryadobates olfersioides by Grant, Lyra, Hofreiter, Preick, Barlow, Verdade, and Rodrigues, 2025, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 472: 42 (and who provided a detailed account covering molecular markers, comparative morphology, and natural history), where it had been placed by Verdade and Rodrigues, 2007, J. Herpetol., 41: 572.
