Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 87: 21. Type locality: "in Ecuador; ad sylvas pagi S. Jose de Moti", Cantón de Quijos, Napo Province, Ecuador. Páez-Vacas, Coloma, and Santos, 2010, Zootaxa, 2711: 26, noted that the original type locality cannot be located and other aspects render this locality ambiguous.

Distribution
Elevations of 1420–1740 m on the northeastern side of the Andes in the provinces of Sucumbíos, Caquetá, and Napo, Ecuador; also from Florencia on the eastern slope of the eastern Andes of Caquetá, Colombia, at 980 m.

Natural Resident: Colombia, Ecuador

See account by Coloma, 1995, Misc. Publ. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 87: 21. Páez-Vacas, Coloma, and Santos, 2010, Zootaxa, 2711: 1–75, considered this species to be part of the Hyloxalus bocagei complex and (p. 11–27) provided an account. Sánchez, 2013, Zootaxa, 3637: 586, reported the species from Florencia municipality, Caquetá, Colombia.
