Faivovich, Haddad, Baêta, Jungfer, Álvares, Brandão, Sheil, Barrientos, Barrio-Amorós, Cruz, and Wheeler, 2010, Cladistics, 26: 235, on the basis of an extensive molecular analysis suggested Phrynomedusa to be the sister taxon of all other phyllomedusines. Baêta, Giasson, Pombal, and Haddad, 2016, Herpetol. Monogr., 30: 49–78, reviewed the genus.
