Comment
Type locality (the only known range) has been destroyed by goats and cattle (pers. comm., R. Etheridge to DRF). Reviewed (as Telmatobius somuncurensis) by Cei, 1980, Monit. Zool. Ital., N.S., Monogr., 2: 248-252. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 409. Ferraro, Blotto, Baldo, Barrasso, Barrionuevo, Basso, Cardozo, Cotichelli, Faivovich, Pereyra, and Lavilla, 2018, in Vaira, Akmentins, and Lavilla (eds.), Cuad. Herpetol., 32 (Supl. 1): 17–19, recovered Pleurodema somoncurense as the sister species Pleurodema bufonium and suggested that the taxonomic status of this species remains problematic, subsequently in a data-dense study (Ferraro, 2022, Cladistics, 38: 301–319) considered them distinct species differing in exomorphology of adults and tadpoles, osteology, reproductive biology, visceral pigmentation, macroglands development, behavior, and habitat requirements.
