Cophyla phyllodactyla Boettger, 1880, Zool. Anz., 3: 281. Syntypes: 2 specimens mentioned in original description, SMF by implication; SMF 1183a (4 specimens) according to Boettger, 1892, Kat. Batr. Samml. Mus. Senckenb. Naturforsch. Ges.: vi; SMF 4296 (new numbering system) designated lectotype by Mertens, 1967, Senckenb. Biol., 48(A): 49. Type locality: "insula Nossi-Bé", Madagascar.

Andreone, Glaw, Nussbaum, Raxworthy, Vences, and Randrianirina, 2003, J. Nat. Hist., London, 37: 2119–2149, discussed the occurrence of this species on Nosy Be. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 138–139, provided an account. Roberts and Daly, 2014, Salamandra, 50: 18–26, reported this species from Nosy Komba, between Nosy Be and the mainland.
