Known from Higashihiroshima-shi, Takehara-shi, and Kure-shi in Hiroshima Prefecture, and Imabari-shi in Ehime Prefecture, Honshu, Japan. 


Formerly confused with Hynobius akiensis according to the original publication, where morphometric and mtDNA markers were detailed. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 121, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
