Prior to its recognition, confused with Hynobius stejnegeri, according to the original publication. See comment under Hynobius stejnegeri for access to relevant literature prior to 2019. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 113–114, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
