Hynobius setouchi Matsui, Okawa, Tanabe, and Misawa in Matsui, Okawa, Nishikawa, Aoki, Eto, Yoshikawa, Tanabe, Misawa, and Tominaga, 2019, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 38: 53. Holotype: KUHE OU 0285, by original designation. Type locality: "Shimokoume, Takebe-cho, Kita-ku, Okayamashi, Okayama Prefecture, (34°53'01"N, 133°55'40"E, alt. 150 m)", Japan. 

English Names

 Setouchi salamander (original publication). 

Distribution

Western Kinki, eastern Chugoku, and eastern Shikoku regions of southern Honshu and Shikoku, Japan (Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kagawa, Tokushima, Osaka, and Wakayama Prefectures), 20 to 460 m elevation. 

Comment

Previous to being named, confused with Hynobius nebulosus. Hara and Nishikawa, 2020, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 37: 1–12, reported on intraspecific external and skeletal morphology.
