Herpetol., Kyoto, 38: 53. Holotype: KUHE OU 0285, by original designation. Type locality: "Shimokoume, Takebe-cho, Kita-ku, Okayamashi, Okayama Prefecture, (34°53'01"N, 133°55'40"E, alt. 150 m)", Japan.

Distribution

Western Kinki, eastern Chugoku, and eastern Shikoku regions of southern Honshu and Shikoku, Japan (Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kagawa, Tokushima, Osaka, and Wakayama Prefectures), 20 to 460 m elevation.

Previous to being named, confused with Hynobius nebulosus. Hara and Nishikawa, 2020, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 37: 1–12, reported on intraspecific external and skeletal morphology. Hara and Nishikawa, 2022, Anat. Rec., 305: 1295-1558, characterized osteology. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 105–106, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
