Neotype designated (indirectly as Rana daunchina Chang, 1933) by Fei and Ye In Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 11161 as CIB 638899. Type locality: "a pond of Hountsinping [= Hungchun-ping], Mount Omei, Omeihsien . . ., 1300 meters altitude", Sichuan, China. Neotype from "Mt. Emei, Sichuan Prov., China: 1900 m". Preoccupied by Rana musica Linnaeus, 1766 (= Bufo terrestris).

In the Rana (Nidirana) adenopleura group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 324. Very similar to Rana adenopleura but differs in mating calls and egg deposition (Hu, 1985, in Frost (ed.), Amph. Species World: 488). See Liu, 1950, Fieldiana, Zool. Mem., 2: 253-260 (as Rana adenopleura). See Rana caldwelli. See accounts by Ye, Fei, and Hu, 1993, Rare and Economic Amph. China: 239; and Fei, 1999, Atlas Amph. China: 178-179. Account (as Rana adenopleura) provided by Yang, 1991, Amph. Fauna of Yunnan: 114-116. Fei and Ye, 2001, Color Handbook Amph. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 305, provided a brief account (as Hylarana daunchina) including photographs of specimens and habitat. Chen, Cui, Fang, Brauth, and Tang, 2011, J. Herpetol., 45: 406–416, reported on advertisement calls. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 346, provided an account (as Nidirana daunchina), photographs, and a range map for China.
