Rana swinhoana Boulenger, 1903, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 7, 12: 556. Syntypes: BMNH (2 specimens), by original designation, these being BMNH 1947.2.3.97–98 (formerly 1899.4.24.104–105) according to museum records. Type locality: "Bangkimtsing [= Chihshan or Wanluan], Formosa [= Taiwan]", China.

Subgenus Eburana of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 328. Removed from the synonymy of Rana narina, without discussion, by Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 328. Liu and Hu, 1961, Tailless Amph. China: 212, considered Chinese populations of Rana montivaga to be referable to Rana swinhoana Boulenger, 1903, which was formerly as a subspecies of Rana narina, following Wang and Chan, 1977, Q. J. Taiwan Mus., 30: 329–339 (who also included Rana kosempensis Werner, 1914, as a synonym). Zhao and Adler, 1993, Herpetol. China: 150, rejected the synonymy of Rana swinhoana with Rana narina on the basis of differences in the snout and feet. See accounts by Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 1224–1228, provided accounts, figures, and map for China as both Odorrana taiwaniana (in their Odorrana taiwaniana group) and (pp. 1289–1294) as Odorrana swinhoana (in their Odorrana schmackeri group). The rejection by these authors of the synonymy by Matsui, 2005, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 24: 1–6, of Odorrana swinhoana with Odorrana taiwaniana is confusing (DRF). Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 344 (as Odorrana swinhoana) and page 321 (as Odorrana taiwaniana), provided brief accounts including photographs of specimens of nominal Odorrana swinhoana. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 392 (as Odorrana swinhoana) and 393 (as Odorrana taiwaniana), provided accounts, photographs, and a range maps. Guo, Yang, and Li, 2009, Colored Illust. Amph. Rept. Taiwan: 100–101, provided a brief account, photographs, and map, as Rana swinhoana.
