Comment
See comments under Platymantis with which this taxon was long confused. Brown, 1965, Breviora, 218: 1-16, provided a key to the species of the Solomon Islands (as Platymantis). Brown and Tyler, 1968, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 81: 69-86, reviewed the species, as Platymantis, from New Britain. Zweifel, 1969, Am. Mus. Novit., 2374: 1-19, reviewed the New Guinea species, as Platymantis. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 83-84, discussed the paraphyly of nominal Platymantis at the time on morphological grounds and possibility of a generic partition, as well as providing a key to the species of New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, New Britain, and the Solomons (all of which are now in Cornufer). Köhler, Schultze, Günther, and Plötner, 2008, J. Zool. Syst. Evol. Res., 46: 177-185, reported on the genetic diversity and relative phylogenetics of Platymantis (these species now assigned to Cornufer) in western New Guinea. Pikacha, Morrison, and Richards, 2008, Frogs Solomon Islands: 45-56, provided a key and brief accounts for the species of the Solomon Islands (as Platymantis). Discodeles, now a subgenus of Cornufer, was first recognized as a genus by Noble, 1931, Biol. Amph.: 523 (but, who implicitly did not include the Indian species in the taxon, which are now Indirana). Norris in Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 80, suggested that recognition of Discodeles renders Platymantis paraphyletic. This result was corroborated by Wiens, Sukumaran, Pyron, and Brown, 2009, Evolution, 63: 1217-1231. Pikacha, Morrison, and Richards, 2008, Frogs Solomon Islands: 37-42, provided a key and accounts for the species of the Solomon Islands. See comment under Platymantis. Batrachylodes, now a subgenus of Cornufer, was reviewed by Brown and Parker, 1970, Breviora, 346: 1-31, who named new species. Norris in Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 75, suggested that the genus is monophyletic. Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 76, provided a key to the species in the genus. Pikacha, Morrison, and Richards, 2008, Frogs Solomon Islands: 27-34, provided a key and accounts for the species of the Solomon Islands. See comment under Platymantis. Portik, Streicher, and Wiens, 2023, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 188 (107907): 25, found in their molecular phylogenetic analysis a number of nominal Platymantis species (i.e., Platymantis batantae, Platymantis bimaculatus, Platymantis bufonulus, Platymantis caesiops, Platymantis cryptotis, Platymantis cheesmanae, Platymantis punctatus, Platymantis myersi, and Platymantis wuenscheorum) but took no taxonomic actions.
